Two instructors teach at Compass and Prop, out of our hangar at Brennand Airport in Neenah. You train with the same one from your first lesson through your checkride, so every lesson builds on the last. Both of us are here because we like teaching people to fly.
Dan Lauerman
Founder and Certified Flight Instructor
Hello! I'm Dan Lauerman, a Certified Flight Instructor (CFI) with Compass and Prop Flight Training, based at Brennand Airport in Neenah, WI and serving the Fox Valley. With my Commercial Single-Engine Land (SEL) license and CFI - Airplane certification, I'm passionate about sharing the joy of flying with others.
My Journey
My aviation journey has been a winding path. Like many aspiring pilots, I’ve attempted to start my training several times throughout my life. I understand firsthand the challenges of balancing the cost, time commitment, and occasional intimidation that comes with pursuing a pilot’s license. This experience has shaped my approach to flight instruction, and I’m dedicated to making the process as supportive and enjoyable as possible for my students.
A Commitment to Excellence
My goal isn’t just to help you earn your ratings; I want to help you become a truly skilled and confident pilot. I believe that quality instruction goes beyond checkboxes and certifications, it’s about fostering a deep understanding of flying and developing good decision-making skills in the cockpit.
Industry Experience
In addition to my role as a flight instructor, I work in the aviation software industry. This experience provides me with unique insights into the challenges students face and the latest advancements in training tools. I’m committed to using this knowledge to enhance your learning experience and help you navigate the complexities of flight training effectively.
John Payne
Certified Flight Instructor
After earning my bachelor's degree in Atmospheric Science, I sidestepped into a career as a musician teaching and performing. Circling back to meteorology brought a discovery flight and a newfound interest in aviation. That quickly became a passion that’s now dedicated to helping others experience the freedom of flight!
I’m a pianist and drummer, and you can easily get me going on a discussion of music theory or jazz history. I’m also an avid endurance athlete, seemingly always training for another marathon, triathlon, or bike race. Anything to get me outdoors into my happy place. Racing, camping, paddling, backpacking, bike touring… always up for a new adventure.
Let’s Fly Together
Whether you’re just starting out or coming back to flying after a break, the first step is the same: a conversation about where you are and where you want to go. Reach out to get started, or book a discovery flight and meet us at the hangar.
